Good Old Days Of Fish Raising

$9.95 for a box of fish food!!!!!!!! Why, I remember when we made our Goldfish food at home and they loved it! The little dickens would swim across the pond against the current , both ways, to ingest my colliery delights. These wimpy new fangled fish don’t know what a great meal is. Where is my copy of Bob Metlich’s Recipes??? That old Fish breeder knew how to save a buck! Granted, a Goldfish will eat dang near anything that it can get into it’s mouth including rocks, worms, bugs, Cheerio’s , Duck weed and Algae just to start the list.

Bob’s Goldfish Cake (catchy name eh?)

1.5 cups white or whole wheat flour

1 cup cornmeal

4 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

1 cup pureed boiled turkey

1 cup pureed boiled vegetables

1 cup pureed eggs

cup meat broth

6 TUMS(add to the boiling meat to dissolve) ((its for the calcium not indigestion))

Mix all of the dry stuff Add the wet stuff The dough should be thick and pourable Pour into a 9 X 13 greased Cake pan. Bake at 350 for 40 to 60 minutes (Cake is done when a broom straw inserted in the center comes out clean.) ((we learned this in Home Ec.) Turn out on a rack to cool. Slice and allow to partially dry. As it crumbles easier if its a bit on the dry side. (the fish will dunk it in water anyway) Place in Zip lock bags and freeze.

(Sheesh. I bet you thought this was for human consumption)

Goldfish Jell-O (Sick humor, I know, but I bet you’ll read on)

1 cup pureed boiled meat (ain’t blenders great!)

1 cup pureed boiled vegetables (got you beat, I’m already ahead of you. Baby food works great)

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons powdered plain gelatin

Mix everything together making sure the gelatin is dissolved thoroughly. Pour into something that will hold water and allow to cool, uncovered, in the fridge (This is April but I suggest you label it so that when Pops stumbles down stairs in the middle of the night and hits the fridge for a snack… need I say more?). Slice and feed away(to the fish not Pops!). It freezes well. This is a basic, thick and chewy mix. If your fish are small, use less gelatin. If your fish are large, then add a bit more.

Bob has raised fish for years on Baby food and Gelatin. Granted brine shrimp will make the fry grow faster but raising enough sea monkeys for 2 million gold fish fry is a big task also. The Goldfish Jell-O slowly melts feeding your fish all day.

The Goldfish Cake costs about two bucks to make and feeds thirty Goldfish for just over a month. The best thing about goldfish cake is you can add just about anything to it and it will work fine. Bob has used boiled fish (carp, white bass, etc.) left over veggies from dinner, surplus stuff from the garden. Just think sometimes making Goldfish cake is almost nothing and the fish keep on growing. Neat huh? Well it may cloud the water a bit, but the bog filter will take care of that.

(THESE ARE ACTUAL FISH FOOD RESIPES THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE) Thanks Bob!
